INFORMATION FOR THE NOVICE
This information is for those new to the Model A world. These are some of the questions which I had when looking into Model As. This is not intended as in-depth information or history since that can be readily found elsewhere. The intent is to give the novice some basic information when starting their journey into the Model A world.
When was the Model A produced?
- Replaced the Model T which had been in production prior for 18 years.
- Was first produced on October 20, 1927, but not introduced until December 2, 1927 (released as the 1928 model)
- Was seen by 10 million people the 1st week
- Hit one million vehicles sold by February 4, 1929
- Sold for between $385 - $570
- Production ended March 1932
- 4,849,340, including all body styles, were produced
What are some of the features of a Model A?
- 1st vehicle with safety glass windshield
- 1st Ford with oval blue logo
- Hydraulic shocks
- 40 hp, water-cooled, inline four-cylinder engine
- Top speed 55 - 65 mph
- 103.5-inch wheelbase
- Unsynchronized three-speed sliding-gear manual transmission with a single speed reverse
- Four-wheel mechanical drum brakes
- Standard set of driver controls with conventional clutch and brake pedals, throttle, and gearshift
- 6-volt, positive ground electrical system
- Different exterior colors, some including two tones
What are the common body styles of the Model A?
- Sedan Tudor (2 door) / Fordor (4 door) / Convertible (2 door)
- Coupe (2 door) Sport Coupe (2 door)
- Roadster (Open Air, 2 door, with or without rumble seat)
- Cabriolet (Like Roadster but with wind up windows and standard rumble seat)
- Phaeton (Open Air 4 seat)
- Deluxe Phaeton (Open Air, 2 seat)
- Pickup Truck
What is the origin of the words Tudor & Fordor?
There are a few theories of where these names may have originated from.
1. Misspelling by Henry Ford since he never learned to read or write well.
2. Tudor came from the name of a well-known European royal house of Wesh, and Fordor was just a play on words.
3. Tudor and Fordor were just a marketing play on words.
4. Fordor was used to incorporate the name Ford (FORDor), and both became a marketing play on words.
Where did these names come from?
Phaeton: a light, four-wheeled, open drawn carriage (Phaeton was a character from Greek Mythology).
Sedan: an enclosed chair for carrying one person, carried between horizontal poles by two or more porters.
Cabriolet: a light two-wheeled carriage with a hood, drawn by one horse.
Coupe: a four-wheeled closed horse-drawn carriage for two persons inside with an outside seat for the driver in front.
What cars did Ford make before the Model A?
Henry Ford was starting his third attempt in the automotive industry in 1903. Ford started the “Ford Motor Company”, assembling cars at the Ford’s Mack Avenue plant in Detroit, MI. Ford’s team designed the cars, but had no way to manufacture the parts, so contracted the parts out. The Mack Avenue plant would then assemble the parts.
Henry named his cars using the alphabet. Starting with the letter A, he worked his way through the alphabet with each new design. Not all designs made it to production. It is said, Henry Ford started over with the letter A for the 1927 model because it was such a change from the older models.
On July 23, 1903, Ernest Pfennig from Chicago became the first Model A owner.

What is the shifting pattern of a Model A?
How do you start a Model A?
Seems everyone has their own sequence in starting and each car is a little different in the actual settings.
1. Make sure parking brake is on
2. Put into neutral
3. Turn on gas, the lever pointed down.
4. Adjust choke
5. Turn on key
6. Retard spark lever (all the way up) then pull down a couple notches
7. Pull throttle lever all the way up and then pull down a couple notches
8. Pull out choke
9. Push starter button on the floor
Does the Model A have any type of heater?
No. Heating was accomplished by wearing extra clothes or blankets, or by setting your own heat source inside the car (ex: insulated box filled with coal, hot brick, or hot water). Aftermarket units were available, like the manifold heater which funneled air over the manifold and blew it through a vent mounted in the firewall.
What type of gas and oil does a Model A use?
The Model A takes regular gas and doesn’t need any additives. Most people use regular or synthetic 10W/30 motor oil.
How hard is it to find parts for a Model A?
One of the beauties of a Model A is that just about every part is still available and there are numerous companies that sell them.
What is the most amount of money a Model A has been sold for?
In 2010, bank robber John Dillinger’s 1930 Model A Coupe sold at auction for $165,000.
In 2012, a 1903 Ford Model A Rear Entry Tonneau sold at auction for $264,000. It is said to have had only 5 owners since 1903.
